Erie New-In-Town (or Not) Meetup Group

Welcome new members, upcoming things to do, Twitter, and bloggers wanted…

Hey everyone!

Apparently last night was at Sluggers a REALLY good time, so I’m happy about that. There will be many more events in downtown Erie. With football going on, plus hockey season starting and also Bayhawks season coming up, we’ll be attending lots of sporting events, too.

Welcome to the new members! There are a handful, actually. Even if you aren’t new, if you haven’t been to the message to board to introduce yourself, please do!

Upcoming Things to Do:

TUESDAY SEP 22 5:30 PM/7:30 PM – Light the Night Walk: I’m walking in the annual Light the Night Walk this year, and you’re welcome to join me. This isn’t a “traditional” meetup group event, but I wanted to put it out there in case you didn’t know it was happening. This is a free event.

**SATURDAY SEP 26 7:30 PM – Dinner @ 1201, and drinks (Night Out on the Town)
! 1201 is supposed to be a great place to eat, and Eric is organizing this event, so it’ll be a good time.

SUNDAY SEP 27 4:00 PM – Sunday NFL!!!!! We’re meeting at Sluggers to watch the Steelers beat (er, play) the Bengals.

**SATURDAY OCT 3 6:45 PM – Erie Otters Home Opener – Come on guys, when in Erie, do as the Erieites do!!! Dude, hockey is a lot more fun at the arena than on TV. So come on out, have a ‘dog, have a beer and relax. Hopefully we’ll see a good game, and maybe a fight’ll break out (maybe?? ha!). See you there.

**Events marked with (**) are “super-events.” They’re downtown, a great way to meet other people, and you should really try to come to these ones. ;-)

TWITTER
Have you been to our Twitter page? You should. It gets updated with pretty much everything that’s new on our website. http://twitter.com/er… Follow us.

BLOGGERS WANTED
By trade, I work on blogs, so while working on our blog for the group is fun, I would love some help because I feel like I can’t get away from blogging! If you go to an event and want to write about, awesome – please do. It’s easy to register and be a guest blogger. The more content, the better. Ask me for specifics, but essentially, I’d love the blog to be a place for a collection of not only events, but also writing, art, etc.

Upcoming Things to Do… (with us)

Last night at Nouveau and Molly’s and Arts and Drafts!

If you missed it – last night was  a blast.  It really was much more fun than I thought it would be!  The Erie New-In-Town (or Not) meetup group “met up” at Nouveau@Erie Art Museum (a party series the museum throws quarterly) and listened to amazing music by Jeremy Quezada … and a soulful singer (name unknown?).  The art was, of course, fantastic, and the yummy food was provided by Molly Brannigan’s.  There was also champagne, wine and beer provided free of charge (tips were donation).  It was awesome. They had a huge turnout, too. Again, more than I expected!

Check out all the photos here: http://www.meetup.com/Social-Erieites/photos/700029/

We literally closed the place down (who wouldn’t – with free champagne all night?) and then headed over to Molly’s for the after party. Nouveau provided a $3 drink ticket good for use at the after parties at Molly’s from here on out (I guess?) and that was much appreciated. The music followed us, and a couple of us got out on the dance floor and shook it. :-)

Looking for something to do tonight?

What is there to do in Erie, PA? Are there really things to do in Erie?? First of all, silly question! LOTS! But even I was scratching my head asking that very question a few months ago… Last night, there was a block party at 10th and State in downtown Erie. I didn’t get to stay for long, but it was cool from my viewpoint.

So tonight, we’re going to the Nouveau party series at the Erie Art Museum. Tonight’s party is put on by YEP (Young Erie Professionals) and a bunch of restaurants and bars. For $8 you get into the museum, get some food, some live music, and cool clay artwork (you can even MAKE some artwork). It’s from 6-8 PM and a group of us is going to be there, so if you’re in, RSVP here. See you tonight!

Latest and Greatest (Monday News)

Quick updates from Tia…

Polls
I’ve decided to keep the polls open for a few more weeks. New votes continue to come in as more people join, so once the membership stabilizes a bit, I’ll close the current polls and maybe put up some new ones. Go check out the results. http://www.meetup.com/Social-Erieites/polls/

New Message Board Forum
Introduce yourself! There’s now a forum just for this, and it’s a good way to perhaps connect with a few people even outside of the actual meetup events. So leave a few words about yourself, make a few friends and the rest is history. http://www.meetup.com/Social-Erieites/messages/boards/forum/1134049

Upcoming Events
THIS FRIDAY: 6-8 PM, Party at the Erie Art Museum downtown. It’ll be fun; join us.

THIS SATURDAY: Coffee Hour at Tim Horton’s.

FRIDAY SEP 4: POSSIBLE Waldamere at 7:30 for fun and then fireworks? Interested? Let me know. If a couple more people show interest I’ll make it an event. See this under Current Ideas.

Twitter

So in an effort to publicize the group a little bit, we now have a Twitter account: http://twitter.com/eriemeetupgroup. Follow us! I’ll be tweeting the normal stuff but also tweeting about upcoming events, rants and raves about venues we’ve been to and the occasional reminder that we’re here and we want people to join.

I have a love/hate relationship with Twitter. I used it a bit when I was working from home full time, have set endless numbers of clients up with Twitter accounts… it just isn’t effective unless used often and in just the right proportions of humor and information, to keep people interested! So I’m hoping I can strike that balance and make it work for our group. We’ll see…

Putt-Putt & Drinks in Erie: Great time!

It was just three of us: two Eric’s and a Tia, but we had a great time out at Harborview Mini Golf. First of all, putting on that course is much more challenging and fun than it looks. Eric #2 beat us, but we’ll get him next time.

Drinks – scratched Calamari’s and walked down to The Cove. This was a great plan and I think we’ll do this again. It’s nice to have things within walking distance so you only have to park once. :-) I’m strongly considering scheduling another event doing this because some people missed out but it was such a great time that I think more people would like to do it.

Anyway, have a great week.

Sat. Aug 22 – Mix & Mingle: Putt-Putt followed by Drinks at Calamari’s Squid Row

A chance for you to meet some people in the group as well as some people outside of the group, too!

Join the group & RSVP: http://www.meetup.com/Social-Erieites/calendar/11083750/

Meet us for Putt-Putt at Harborview Mini-Golf on Saturday, August 22 and then head on over to Calamari’s Squid Row for drinks (or decide later where to go). Other possible choices are Molly Brannigan’s and Under the Clock – each place is pretty different.

Putt-Putt is $6.00 and the course is on the Erie Bayfront, at the intersection of State Street and the Bayfront Parkway.

Calamari’s Squid Row looks like a lot of fun – darts, pool and casual.

Molly Brannigan’s seems like an Erie tradition, almost, with all of the talk about this place! Not too casual, not too uptight…

Under the Clock is one of Erie’s newest bar/restaurants and looks pretty nice.  After 18 rounds of putt-putt it might be a little on the stiff side, though.  From the pics, it seems like a better place for dinner and drinks rather than just drinks.

Anyway, looking forward to meeting some of you there!

Up late… but I just want to say this:

Ugh, I’m exhausted.  It’s Monday, I worked all day, FINALLY bought another car (thank you, thank you Paul!), played with my toddler son (heretofore known as “A”), bathed “A”, caught up with a few e-mails and am now grass-roots marketing this thing. I’m TOO OLD for this (OK, is 29 too old? Feels like it).

But here’s the thing: I’m not just doing this for me; the group really needs it and moreso the people in the group need it.  All of the effort will eventually pay off.  I believe that cities and towns are what you make of them.  A city is only boring because the PEOPLE living in it are boring.  Buildings are buildings, lakes are lakes, grass is grass and gravel is gravel.  The real difference from place to place are the people.

So here in Erie we’ve got some boredom issues but there are A LOT of things to do.  It’s no DC, I’ll give you that.  But, the social calendar here is not bone-dry.  And even if it was, it’s no excuse to sit around and get fat and ugly.
